Tonghan Ancient Learning and Xu Shen’s “Five Different Meanings”

1. Donghan “Five General Issue” Classic

 

(I) “Common Issue” and “General Issue”

 

According to Han people’s views, it is said that writings of the following categories should be studied under the names of “Five General Issue” or “Five Different Issue”. However, the “Sui Book·Journal of Records” (hereinafter referred to as “Sui Zhi”) called it “Five General Issue”, and the officials of the Four Library and Library were very similar to this, so they listed it according to this [1]. Yu Jiaxi’s “Four Library and Collective Identification and Collective Identification” also called it: “The title of “Sui Yao” in this category can also be considered as good!” In addition, the names of “Five Library” are more “group”, “Seven Library” and “Nine Library” are more appropriate [2], but they do not distinguish between “General Issue” and “General Issue”. “The Book of Later Han·Cai Yong’s Episode” read Yong’s “Fengshi”: “In the past, Xiaoxuan met with Confucianism in Shiqu, and Emperor Zhang gathered scholars in Baihu, and was well versed in the principles of his work. His work was great and his civil and military methods were suitable for him”[3]. Liu Master Pei said this: “‘Tong’ takes the purpose of communicating the principles, and ‘yi’ is named after the meaning. Since the name comes from the Han Confucian Confucians, it is suitable for the guidance of the generations.” [4] Note Baoqing, “Zhangdi” reads “Assessing the Confucian Confucianism and discusses the similarities of the Five Books… Like the story of Xiaoxuan Ganlu Shiqu, writing “The White Tiger Confucianism””[5]; “Scholars” reads “The examination is very similar, and the moon is full of lunar calendar. The clan of the clan is based on the principles of the Shiqu story, like the story of Shiqu, and the author is a general meaning”[6]; and “The Interpretation of Han Guan” says: “The doctor’s examination is different”[7]. Therefore, what Cai Yong called “common meaning” means “to discuss differences and differences first”, aiming to seek common ground and retain differences, so “common meaning” also has the meaning of “common meaning”. “Baihu Tongyi” says: “Public means being open. It means fairness and selflessness.” [8] Examining the title of “General” in “Sui Zhi” is influenced by Buddhist scriptures. There are general differences between teachings and famous things. As the “Big Wisdom Discussion” says: “All dharmas have two types of appearances, and the total and the different aspects are the two types”; it also says: “The total is like an unconstant; the different forms of appearance, although all the laws are unconstant, each has different aspects.” [9] Therefore, the “total” and “different” of Buddhist scriptures are actually abstract, concrete, whole and different aspects; and the “common meaning” of Han Confucianism is equivalent to “different meaning”. The distinction between “total” is not the distinction between “sameness” of Han and Confucians.

The discussion on the five differences and the common meaning began in the third year of Ganlu in Emperor Xuan of Xihan (51 BC). The “Han Book·Emperor Xuan” published:”The Confucians talked about the “Five Books” in the same way, and the prince and the tutor Xiao Ji and others reported their opinions, and the above said that the system was decided.” [10] As for the many memorials of the Shiqu Conference, “Han Book·Arts” (hereinafter referred to as “Han Books”) recorded “The Memorials of the Constitution” in “Books”, “Treasures”, “Years” and “Onliness”, and the self-notes all said “Shiqu Review”; and after the “Filial Books” “Eighteen Chapters of the “Five Books” and the self-notes said “Baocai ClubShiqu Commentary”[11]. Liu Master Pei called this book “The Five Sessions and Memorials” and said: “Then we first examine each other, and the word “Shu” is written under the “Shu”. It is said that the meaning of “Shu” is nothing but misunderstood. Although it is not implicated in one chapter, the body is not as special as “Shu”.” [12] Therefore, the Shiqu Conference had a special “Shu” and a five-secret “Shu” and a five-secret “Shu”. Unfortunately, all of his books were lost and he was not heard of. However, from this we can see that Han Confucian already had the concept of “Five Sessions”, and the concept of “Five Sessions” also originated from Western Han. “Wang Mang’s Episode” wrote a memorial to all ministers, opting to add Mang’s Nine Xi, saying: “Those who use the six arts to communicate with each other, “Zhou Guan” and “Legendary” are suitable for the present, which are the nine lives of the nine lives.” [13]

 

The Sui Zhi” attached more than 30 books of “Five General Issues” to “Theory”. Among them, those who came out early were books from Dong and Han, including six volumes of “Baihu Tong”, ten volumes of “Five Differences” written by Xu Shen, one volume of “Six Arts” written by Zheng Xuan, and six volumes of “Zheng Xuan” written by Zheng Xuansheng, etc. [14], and “Baihu Tong” was the earliest. This book is recorded in the “Interpretation of the New Tang Book·Artist Book” and “Six Volumes of “Ban Gu and others”.” [15] “Later Han Book·Ban Gu’s Episode” is called “The Emperor ordered the Confucians to explain the five chapters, and wrote “The White Tiger Tongde” and Ling Gu compiled the matter”[16]; Sun Said “A Study on “Bai Tiger Tongde” by “The White Tiger Tongde” by “The Two Stories” by “The White Tiger Tongde” and “De” are not read in conjunction. It is not a book. Li Shan’s “Wen Selection Notes” quoted by Ban Gu The Good Deeds” says: ‘The messenger of Zhu Fu is on the surface of the dragon pile. ‘This is the whole text, and the word “gong” is rumored? ‘[17] Liu Master Pei’s “A Study on the Origin and Flow of “Baihu Tongyi”” also wrote “Baihu Tongyi” as the historical minister of “Ban Gu and others” and wrote “Baihu Tongyi”. Ban Gu wrote “Good Deeds” by himself, and the word “gong” was rumored in the sentence “Baihu Tongyi” in the sentence “Baihu Tongde””. Later generations, like the “Chongwen Book Catalogue” and combined the two books as one topic, which became a confusion. The book recorded in “New Tang Book” should be titled “The Correct Title”. [18]

 

There is also a remark about the ancestor’s “A Study of the White Tiger Tongyi” quoting “Cai Zhonglang Collection” and “Ba County Prefectural Prefect”: “The Su characters of “Quan” are compiled before and after the book, “Shangshu Chapters and Sentences” and “White Tiger Review” have been broken down into 212 volumes.” The case said: “The Ancient Book of the Lunar New Year” is fifty-six volumes, today’s “Quan” is seventeen volumes, and now the “Quan” is seventeen volumes, and the “Shangshu Chapters and Sentences” are the three schools of Euroyang and Yuqing Xiahou, and there are only thirty-one volumes. The two books are not worth a hundred volumes, and the memorials are more than one hundred volumes, which is not clear about the current “Tongyi”.”[19] Sun’s poem makes a step-by-step study and says: “The White Tiger Review” is discussed in detail.Since it follows the story of Shiqu, the comments must also be different from the five comments on the topics. The “Five Comments” in the “White Tiger Controversy” published today are the “Five Comments” in the “Memorial of the White Tiger Controversy”. The memorials of the discussion have their own special books and controversies, and they are intended to cover the crowd and raise the lead, so they do not set up a different chapter on the subject. The text is exquisite, without any questions or answers or decisions, and the examples are very different from the memorials of the discussion. ”[20]
